Is Nose Piercing Haram?

Is nose piercing haram? Some scholars say that nose piercing is haram in Islam as it is a form of mutilation of the face while others claim that it’s okay if it’s a custom and a norm of the society the women live in.

Both sides of the scholars have their viewpoints declared and I personally feel that Muslim women should always avoid anything that has doubt.

The two views are expressed in the following videos:

Is Nose Piercing Haram In Islam?

Many cultures consider nose piercing to be a kind of bodily alteration. There is no clear restriction in the Quran or Hadith prohibiting women from having their noses pierced.

It was not a custom during the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) time, hence Islam does not address it. If Islam does not discuss something, scholars determine the answer by referring to related topics and rulings.

The face is the most valued portion of the body in Islam, and any change to the face is forbidden.

If we follow this rule, nose piercing becomes haram in Islam because it alters the appearance that Allah created.

However, there is a lot of disagreement among Muslims as to whether nose piercing is permissible in Islam. Some say it’s halal or permissible, while others say it’s haram or forbidden.

The scholars on the other side who consider nose piercing halal say that if nose piercing doesn’t relate to any other religion and is only a part of the custom where the Muslim women live then it’s halal or allowed in Islam.

PRO-TIP: Nose piercings are only halal or allowed for women in Islam if they don’t harm the body and are a norm in society. For men, nose piercing is totally forbidden or haram as it is an imitation of women.

There is a fatwa by scholars following the Hanafi school of thought:

The scholars of Hanafi School clearly stated that piercing the nose of a girl to use ornaments is permissible.
So, there is no harm in piercing the nose of a girl for the purpose of using ornaments.

Faraz Rabbani approved the answer on nose piercings that said:

According to the Hanafi school, the default ruling of body piercing is that it is unlawful since it is deemed a type of mutilation, which was explicitly prohibited by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). [Sahih Bukhari]

However, an exception to this ruling is with respect to women, who are allowed to pierce specifically their ears or noses, as that is considered a type of adornment recognized by the Sacred Law. Earrings and nose rings are therefore permissible for women.

For women to pierce other parts of the body, or for men to pierce any part of their bodies, is not recognized as adornment by the Sacred Law and hence remains unlawful mutilation. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
