Prophet Ibrahim (as) decided to emigrate from Egypt to a city called Ur with his wife Hajar and his nephew Lut (as).

“And Lot believed him. [Abraham] said, “Indeed, I will emigrate to [the service of] my Lord. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” (29:26)

On the journey, Prophet Lut (as) eventually decided to go to Sodom and Gomorrah and help guide the lost community there.

During this time Ibrahim (as) and Hajar were still childless and traveling in the desert.

Ibrahim (as) was growing more concerned over the idea of having his lineage end with him.

In the Qur’an it reveals the exact du’a which Ibrahim (as) made, Rabbi hab lee minas saaliheen, meaning “My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous”. He kept making du’a and Allah (swt) eventually granted the couple with their first son. In the following verse it says, “So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.” (37:101)

To show their gratitude, they named their first son Ishmael meaning, “God listens” or “God has heard”.

If we read the Prophetic du’as in Qur’an it can seem as if things happened immediately for them, as if they were favored, simple formula of ask and it was given.

This is not the case, we often forget the context but Ibrahim (as) kept making du’a and it was only in his old age did Allah respond to this call.
