Skittles have been a favorite candy of ours since we were children, and we never questioned if they were halal or haram. In my research, I found Skittles to be halal.

In addition to the original Skittles flavor, nearly all of the popular flavors are both halal and vegan. In spite of the fact that Skittles has not been certified as halal by any Muslim organization, Muslims still believe that they are halal-friendly since they are vegan.

Why Are Skittles Halal?

“If they are suitable for vegetarians then they are halal.

If they are not, as has been found, then they are haram because they contain blood.”

This is a general rule in Islam that which vast majority of Muslims follow. If anything is vegan it is considered halal as there is no animal involved. Any involvement of animals will have a risk as the animal needs to be slaughtered in order to be halal for Muslims.

Although in the case of Skittles we know that most of its flavors are vegan we do need to make sure all the ingredients are halal including food colors and gelatin. Any Skittles flavor vegan friendly will be considered halal for Muslims to consume.

To find out if Skittles are vegan and halal we need to find all the ingredients used and they need to be gelatin free. From their website SKITTLES we found out the ingredients:

  • HYDROGENATED PALM KERNEL OIL
  • LESS THAN 2% OF: CITRIC ACID, TAPIOCA DEXTRIN, MODIFIED CORN STARCH
  • NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS
  • COLORS (RED 40 LAKE, YELLOW 5 LAKE, BLUE 2 LAKE, YELLOW 6 LAKE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE, BLUE 1 LAKE, YELLOW 6, RED 40, YELLOW 5, BLUE 1)
  • SODIUM CITRATE
  • CARNAUBA WAX

As gelatin is one of the most important concerns when covering foods, we were surprised to see it not on the list. I did not find any items that are forbidden by Islam for Muslims hence I can safely say that original Skittles are halal.

Now we need to make sure that whichever flavor we are buying contains all the halal ingredients too. So I searched for the halal ingredients and made a list of all the halal Skittles for you.
